The team played well, overcoming some stern opposition, in their 5- 1 victory. Special mention to Tina Jeary of Flempton who secured a victory in her first senior match for the county.
Thanks to Ipswich Golf Club for hosting our match, for their exceptionally warm welcome and excellent catering.

Suffolk Seniors play Bedfordshire Seniors in Anglian League
On Monday 4th August, we played our third Anglian League match of the season against Bedfordshire at Dunstable Downs Golf Club. Given the exceptional summer we are experiencing, it was a huge disappointment to find ourselves playing in torrential rain and wind speeds reaching 40mph.
Despite the conditions and a challenging away course, the team secured a very creditable halved match.
Kristina Matthews had the daunting task of leading the team out against Welsh Senior international Sue Caley, who produced some excellent golf for Bedfordshire’s first win of the day. Ann Fosker and Gillian Smith also faced quality opponents and Beds soon had a 3-0 advantage. Rachel Goldsmith and Lynne Barrett had convincing wins leaving Rita Fossey to decide the overall result; this was Rita’s first Anglian League match, and she battled stoically to secure the third vital point for Suffolk, on the final green.
Thanks to Dunstable Downs Golf Club for their exceptionally warm welcome, a well presented course and excellent catering.

Result: Suffolk 3 – Bedfordshire 3
Kristina Matthews (Ipswich) v Sue Caley 8&7 Loss
Ann Fosker (Felixstowe Ferry) v Chris Jones 3&1 Loss
Rachel Goldsmith (Rookery Park) v Gill Westgate 3&2 Win
Rita Fossey (Halesworth) v Breege Traynor 1up Win
Gillian Smith (Felixstowe Ferry) v Shirley Darrah 5&4 Loss

Senior Championships 2025

Sharon Luckman – Ipswich GC – Gross Matchplay Winner
The title was retained by Sharon Luckman who beat Jo Miller, Hintlesham, in the quarter final, Anja Carter, Seckford, in the semi-final and Tessa Summers, Aldeburgh, in the final. Sharon put on a putting master class to take the trophy home with her for a consecutive year; Tessa Summers was a valiant and tireless runner-up.

Tessa Summers – Aldeburgh GC – Scratch Matchplay runner up

Viv Leech – Halesworth GC- Nett Matchplay Winner
The Nett Matchplay Champion was Viv Leach, Halesworth, Viv beat Liz Higgens, Ipswich, in the semi-final and Sheila Boath, Ipswich, in the final with some beautiful golf. Viv won the final on the 17th green, a minute before the heavens opened, much to the relief of the spectators.

Sheila Boath – Ipswich GC – Nett Matchplay runner up

Kristina Matthews – Ipswich GC – Gross Strokeplay Winner
The Strokeplay Champion was Kris Matthews, this was a massive achievement for Kris -having sustained a broken ankle and wrist at her home club, Ipswich, in January. Kris shot 80, a very respectable round considering the rain and 2 shots clear from her nearest rival, Anja Carter.

Anja Carter – Seckford GC – Gross Strokeplay runner up

Tracy Ward – Bramford GC – Stokeplay Handicap Winner
The Nett Strokeplay Champion was Tracy Ward, Bramford: it was great to see new ladies entering the championship and Tracy’s back 9 of 36 was particularly impressive and made up for the three 7s she had on the front.

Sheila Boath – Ipswich GC – Strokeplay Handicap runner up
A big thank you to Brett Vale for hosting the event – the course was as pretty as always and the new pond on the 8thdelighted the players with the drama it provided. Sue Lockwood generously gave up her weekend once again this year to ref the event – thank you Sue! This was the last event for Christine Ashe, Competition Organiser, her service has been excellent.
Vicki Hunt (President) and Emily Penfold (Captain) presented the prizes.
