Rookery Park v Aldeburgh at Bungay and Waveney Golf Club
What a fantastic final between the winner of League 1A and the winner of 1B. The weather was almost perfect; warm and sunny with a breeze to make it an ideal temperature for golf. Bungay GC was looking great and the greens were rolling beautifully.
The standard of golf on display was high and all the games were very close; after 9 holes no one was more than one or two up or they was all square. The second 9 proved to be as close with all games going to at least the 16th. It was two matches and a half to Rookery and one and a half to Aldeburgh with one game still out on the course; Aldeburgh needing the win to tie the match. This was duly delivered and so one player from each side headed off down the first for a ‘sudden death’ play off. The first hole both drives were excellent – down the middle. Their second shots were on the green or thereabouts. Aldeburgh put their putt close, Rookery chipped leaving a tricky 15 footer for the half but this was duly holed. On to the 2nd; two great drives again! Aldeburgh’s shot to the green was a little left so it didn’t quite make it to the green, leaving a tricky chip from the bank. Rookery’s was a little long leaving a chip back up the green. Aldeburgh managed to make the ‘up and down’ to complete the hole in 4 and unfortunately Rookery made a 5. So, by the tightest of margins, Aldeburgh won the final.
Well done to both teams; winning their league was a great achievement in itself, needing all the players to perform consistently over the season. It is great to see that ladies golf in Suffolk is in good shape; there is an increasing breadth and depth in the county borne out by the 1st, 2nd and Junior teams very creditable performances in the East Region Inter-County Match Days.
